What are the difference between cable-modem and DSL?
San Bruno Cable Internet service delivers content directly to your personal computer via a cable connection and cable modem. DSL, or Digital Subscriber Line is a modem technology that transforms ordinary phone lines (also known as "twisted copper pairs") into high-speed digital lines for fast Internet access. You must have a DSL modem and live within a certain distance of your telephone company's central office to get a DSL Internet service. Dedicated but limited finite bandwidth to "Last Mile". Network media sharing occurs at the CO or CO Extension. Maximum available

Cable and "Shared Last Mile"
We have extremely high aggregate bandwidth to "Last Mile". Network media sharing occurs throughout cable system, but total available bandwidth per node can easily be increased over a factor of 10 by allocating free channel frequencies. Today, (Dec 2002) our busiest node peaks at about a half of a channel, and averaged under 25% during the last month. We have at least 15 additional channels available for Internet use if required. Theoretically, our HFC system could expand to serve a city with a population of 1 million at existing subscriber density, network usage, and protocol specs, without incurring any slowdowns due to shared bandwidth saturation on our cable plant. Or, if every San Bruno Cable TV customer were to purchase Internet service, we would be able to easily provide our current network performance and still have at least 10 spare channels left over for expansion. In other words, we cannot forsee normal operation of our cable network to approach a sustained saturation condition due to oversubscription. Back To Top
How does the cable connect to my computer?
The cable is run to a cable modem next to your computer. Then the cable modem is connected to your computer via a Network Interface Card (NIC) or Universal Serial Bus (USB) in your computer. It's as simple as that. You must have a NIC card installed prior to cable modem installation. Back To Top
